Students (F-1)
F-1 Visa
The F-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa that allows foreign nationals to enter the United States as full-time students at accredited academic institutions. This visa is ideal for individuals seeking to pursue academic programs, including high school, undergraduate, graduate, or professional degrees, as well as language training programs.
To qualify for an F-1 visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Admission to a U.S. Institution: The applicant must be accepted into a full-time program at a U.S. school, college, or university certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
- Sufficient Financial Resources: Applicants must demonstrate the ability to cover tuition, living expenses, and other associated costs for the duration of their program.
- Temporary Intent: The applicant must prove they intend to return to their home country upon completing their studies and that they do not have immigrant intent.
- Valid Form I-20: The institution will issue a Form I-20, which is required to apply for the F-1 visa at a U.S. consulate/embassy or with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
F-1 students are allowed to remain in the U.S. for the duration of their program plus an additional 60-day grace period. While on an F-1 visa, students may work on-campus part-time and may qualify for off-campus employment opportunities such as Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
